On "Spoonfed" Marketing
A common theme that’s come up in marketing activities in the
last five years is “______ is not enough anymore.” The sad thing is, they are right. Marketers need to get smarter because
consumers have. The use of smartphones
and social media has made consumers more informed than ever. They can now see through an ad and determine
the company’s strategy. This leads consumers
to feel like they are being duped, and that does not bode well for brands.
However, not all is lost, because this has led to some great
innovations in marketing. Some brands
have risen to the challenge and created some excellent content that doesn’t try
to manipulate the consumer, but still uses traditional strategies such as an
emotional appeal.
An Amazon Prime ad comes to mind to illustrate this
point. The message isn’t obnoxious or
spoonfed to the audience. It’s simple,
but effective.
